About
Algele "Cid" Sumulong, M.D., is a passionate and empathetic physician who has provided care in southern New Mexico for more than a decade. He is double board certified in family medicine and obesity medicine. With an excellent bedside manner and extensive experience teaching medical students and residents, he has served as medical director and chief medical officer, advocating for quality patient care on both the local and state level.
The firstborn of two immigrant Filipino nurses, Dr. Sumulong grew up in southern California, where he worked as a high school math tutor, EMT, and search and rescue desert tracker.
At California State University, Fullerton, he served his community as volunteer service president and vice president of the American Medical Student Association. Graduating summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in biology and a minor in chemistry, he went on to win the STARS Community Service Award and the Kenneth-Goodhue McWilliams CSUF Award for his work in creating and directing Project Grace, a hospice volunteer program designed to foster patient empathy and bedside manner amongst pre-med students. He received his medical degree from the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he was geriatric medicine co-president, fundraising chair for the Asian Pacific American Medical Student Association, and volunteered for the UCLA Homeless Mobile Clinic. Seeking to hone his skillset through rural medicine training, he completed his family medicine residency at Hidalgo Medical Services in Silver City and has fallen in love with New Mexico ever since.
