Several board-certified gynecologists perform their gynecologic surgeries using robotic tools. Robotic (or “robot-assisted”) gynecologic surgery is a minimally invasive type of surgery in which the physician uses the tiny and precise “arms” of a special surgical tool to perform the procedure. These robotic tools can operate through incisions that are too small for the physician’s fingers; they also allow the doctor to manipulate surgical tools in a way that would not be possible with the actual human hand.
Robotic GYN surgery may be done through just three to four small incisions, or it may occur via a single incision just inside the belly button. This is known as “single-site” robotic surgery; many hysterectomies can be done this way. Patients in need of the following procedures may be candidates for minimally invasive robot-assisted surgery:
- Removal of gynecological cysts or masses
- Hysterectomy (single-site)
- Myomectomy (removal of uterine fibroids)
- Oophorectomy (removal of the ovaries)
- Ovarian cystectomy
- Salpingectomy (removal of the fallopian tubes)
- Tubal ligation
Minimally invasive robotic surgery has many potential patient benefits, including smaller incisions and less scarring. Ask your gynecologist for more information.
